Final Project Update
This project started from an interest in how to make a very performant ACharacter in Unreal. At this time, a character tick now averages 0.01ms per frame despite still being a fully fledged character actor. I consider that part of this project a success. However, I don't think the project as a whole has been so.
When I started work on this project, the kind of game to make came secondary. Due to this, I was more focused on testing out the new character system rather than making an interesting game. At this time, I don't see how to make this game good without adding an entire new feature set to it give it some meaningful depth (roguelike, player progression, etc..).
Unreal Engine 5 released some time ago and with it the introduction of the Mass/MassAI system. This opens the door for a many order of magnitude more efficient character system as well as other interesting gameplay systems that could greatly benefit from the efficiency and versatility Mass can provide.
I have stopped work on this project to tinker with Mass and how to make interesting things with it in UE5. Maybe next time around I'll make something that is interesting to play too.
